Why It Took Us 2 Years to Create the Perfect Toilet Training Underwear

Why It Took Us 2 Years to Create the Perfect Toilet Training Underwear

After years of helping Australian families through toilet training with our training pants and bed guards, we kept hearing the same question: what comes next?

Parents told us their kids were nearly trained but not quite ready for regular underwear. They needed something in between. Something that felt like real undies but offered a safety net for those occasional accidents.

So we set out to create it. What we thought would take 6 months took 2 years. Here's why.

The Problem We Wanted to Solve

The gap between training pants and regular underwear is bigger than most people realise.

Training pants are designed for active learning. They hold accidents, provide feedback through the feel-wet design, and support children who are still figuring things out.

Regular underwear offers no protection at all. One accident and everything is soaked.

For children who are nearly there but still have the occasional miss, this gap creates stress. Parents worry about accidents at daycare, during outings, or at friends' houses. Kids feel the pressure of needing to be perfect.

We wanted to create something that bridged this gap. Real underwear that kids could feel proud to wear, with just enough protection to catch those rare accidents without the bulk or feel of training pants.

Why It Took 2 Years

Sample 1: Too Much Like Training Pants

Our first samples were too absorbent. They worked well for accidents, but they felt too much like training pants. Kids could tell the difference, and that defeated the purpose.

We wanted children to feel like they were wearing real underwear. That psychological shift matters. It builds confidence and signals that they're ready for this next step.

Back to the drawing board.

Sample 2-5: Finding the Right Absorbency

The next challenge was finding the perfect balance. Enough absorbency to catch a small accident, but not so much that it felt bulky or like a nappy.

We tested different absorbent layers, different placements, different thicknesses. Each sample was worn by real kids in real situations. We listened to feedback from parents about what worked and what didn't.

It took five iterations to get it right. The final design has just enough absorbency to catch a small wee without feeling bulky under clothes.

Sample 6-8: The Comfort Challenge

Once we had the absorbency right, we focused on comfort. This is where we became obsessive.

We wanted to create the comfiest underwear in the world for kids. Not just comfortable enough. The absolute comfiest.

We tested different bamboo blends (settling on 95% bamboo for ultimate softness), different elastic placements, different leg openings, different waistbands. Every detail mattered.

Parents told us their kids refused to take them off. That's when we knew we were getting close.

Sample 9-12: The Fit Problem

Toilet training happens across a wide age range. A 2-year-old and a 4-year-old have very different body shapes.

We needed underwear that fit properly across this range without being too tight or too loose. The elastic needed to be secure without leaving marks. The leg openings needed to prevent leaks without being uncomfortable.

We tested on children of different ages, different builds, different stages of training. We adjusted patterns, changed measurements, refined the fit.

It took four more samples to get the sizing right.

The Details That Matter

95% Bamboo Fabric

We chose bamboo for a reason. It's incredibly soft, naturally breathable, and moisture-wicking. Kids stay comfortable all day, and the fabric feels luxurious against their skin.

This isn't the scratchy, stiff fabric you find in some training products. This is genuinely soft, premium fabric that kids want to wear.

PFAS-Free and OEKO-TEX Certified

Safety was non-negotiable. We made sure our underwear is free from harmful chemicals and certified safe for children's sensitive skin.

Parents shouldn't have to worry about what's touching their child's skin all day.

Pull-Up Style for Independence

By the time children are ready for this stage, they want to do things themselves. The pull-up style means they can manage toilet trips independently, building confidence and self-reliance.

Light Absorbency Without Bulk

The hidden absorbent layer catches small accidents without adding bulk. Under regular clothes, these look and feel like normal underwear.

That matters for daycare, playdates, and outings where kids want to feel like everyone else.

Who They're For

These aren't for children just starting toilet training. They're for kids who are nearly there.

Perfect for children who:

  • Are mostly toilet trained but have occasional accidents
  • Feel ready for real underwear but need a safety net
  • Are confident during the day but need protection for outings
  • Want to feel like a big kid
  • Are building independence

Think of them as the final confidence builder before regular underwear.

How They Fit Into the Toilet Training Journey

Most children progress through stages during toilet training. Some start with toilet training diapers, move to training pants, and then transition to these underwear before regular undies.

Others skip stages or move at different paces. There's no right or wrong path.

What matters is having the right tool for where your child is right now. For children who are nearly trained but not quite ready for regular underwear, these provide the perfect bridge.

Real Feedback From Real Families

Before launching, we sent samples to families to test in real life. Here's what they told us:

"My daughter refused to take them off. She said they were the softest undies ever."

"Perfect for daycare. She feels like a big kid but I don't worry about accidents."

"The fit is amazing. Not too tight, not too loose, just right."

"These gave my son the confidence to fully transition. He knew he had a safety net if he needed it."

"I wish these existed when we were training our first child. They would have made the final stage so much easier."

Why We're Proud of Them

Two years is a long time to develop a product. There were moments when we wondered if we were being too perfectionist, too obsessive about details that maybe didn't matter.

But then we'd get feedback from a parent whose child finally felt confident enough to fully transition. Or a message from a mum whose son wore them proudly to daycare. Or a photo of a little girl refusing to wear anything else because they were so comfortable.

That's when we knew the 2 years were worth it.

We didn't just want to create another toilet training product. We wanted to create the comfiest, most confidence-building underwear for kids taking that final step towards independence.

The Difference Between Training Pants and Training Underwear

Parents often ask: what's the difference?

Training pants are for active learning. They're designed for children who are still having regular accidents and need the feedback of feeling wetness to learn. They have more absorbency and are part of the daily training process.

For a detailed look at training pants options, read our article on disposable vs reusable training pants.

Training underwear is for the final stage. It's for children who are mostly trained but need a safety net for rare accidents. It looks and feels like real underwear, building confidence and independence.

Both have their place. The key is using the right one for where your child is in their journey.

What About Night-Time?

These underwear are designed for daytime use. Night-time dryness is a separate developmental milestone that often takes longer to achieve.

For night-time protection, we recommend continuing to use leakproof bed guards regardless of daytime progress. They make middle-of-the-night accidents easy to handle without full bed changes.
